The branched-chain amino acids – leucine, isoleucine and valine – are unique among amino acids in that they are primarily metabolised extrahepatically in skeletal muscle. BCAA’s are the only three amino acids to possess a branched side chain. They are all essential amino acids and collectively form the largest pool of essential amino acids in the bodily pool (35-40%) and are present in high levels (15-18%) in muscle tissue. BCAA’s serve an important role in the brain in regulating nitrogen metabolism and glutamine synthesis. BCAA readily pass across the blood-brain barrier in an exchange with glutamine and are the major external source of nitrogen for the formation of glutamate and glutamine in the brain. BCAA may help improve exercise and mental performance and have long been studied, showing benefits in reducing muscle soreness, faster recovery time, reduced creatine kinase (which is a good indicator of recovery) and better retention of maximum muscular force.
